The Sabbione lake's dam is the highes in Val Formazza, with its 2500 mt, and it's the biggest hydroelectric reservoir of Piedmont.

The dam was completed in 1953 by the Edison company, so it could block the natural basin and gather water from the Arbola glacier.
During the building works, director Ermanno Olmi filmed his first short movie named "The glacier's dam" (available on YouTube), to show the work of 1200 men who contributed to give electric energy to Italy after the war. Working on shifts day and night.

The water of lake Sabbione is channeled through a pipe down to Morasco power station, while water from lake Morasco goes to Ponte's station.

Due to a landslide, heppened on September 24th, 2023, a part of the trail G39 is unusable, approximately between Città di Busto mountain hut and Sabbione dam. (updated on September 25th, 2023).
