The itinerary begins from the oratory of San Bernardo and enters the pine grove that leads to Rio Rasiga. Here the trail winds up in the woods reaching the Paione alp where, just a little above, atop a morainic formation, a series of military forts are present, overlooked by a “command post”. The forts were built to train the alpine troopers of Intra Battalion in the period between the two World Wars.
The set of forts was restored in 2021 by the alpines of Gruppo Protezione Civile of Domodossola and Bognanco Group.
The itinerary proceeds on gravel and later on a grassy slope, where the trail’s track on the ground is lost, but some trail signs made of stone piles are present until the peak of Costa del Dosso, which is well visible along the whole path, since it’s signaled by a large stone pile.
The last tract to reach the summit is characterized by large rocks that, when wet, could be slippery.
Along the whole climb a unique landscape on Alta Val Bognanco can be seen together with the three lakes of Paione on the right, the Agro lake on the left and, further away, the Monscera lake.
The way back involves reaching Arza alp and going down toward Il Dosso mountain hut where the trail in the woods (or, alternatively, the road) begins.
