The itinerary starts from Nonio and follows the Trail of Elves until Cesara. These two small towns of Cusio, located on the first hills of Lake Orta, show, in their churches and in some small, hidden details in their narrow streets, the signs of a centuries-old history. From the Romanesque, visible in the towering steeple of the church of San Clemente in Cesara until the more recent episodes of the Second World War of which there are no visible signs on the territory, save for the memorial stones and the monuments to the Fallen. But what is left is for sure the memory of the tragic events and of those who gave their lives.

The itinerary proceeds climbing up Monte Castello, administratively divided in two between the towns of Nonio and Cesara, which has two rocky points, without vegetation, that happen to be two amazing panoramic points of view, one facing north and the other facing south. On these two “peaks” there are two crosses: the cross of Nonio and the cross of Cesara dedicated to those Fallen for Freedom.

From the cross of Nonio the sight goes towards the city of Omegna, the nearby peak of Mottarone and the far away peaks of Val Grande, while from the cross of Cesara one can admire Orta, the island of San Giulio and the hills of Vergante, facing the valley of Agogna. From both the points the whole panorama on the basin of Lake Orta can be seen, together with the hills and the mountains surrounding it.
