This trail develops along the dirt road built by the old Edison electric company, serving the lake Toggia's and lake Kastel's dam. Today the road is property of Formazza's district (from 2019 to 2029), with the purpose of project "Monti & Laghi bike" (mountains and lakes bike), which will allow to cross the Alps by bike, connecting to the Swiss bike lane.
The San Giacomo pass separates Italy from Switzerland, Val Formazza from Val Bedretto. It used to be one of the main junctions for cultural and commercial exchanges, so much that back in 1400 the first Hospice was built for merchants (and smugglers!) to move their goods and livestock towards Switzerland.
During the second world war, end especially during the resistance, this pass became a strategic point.
